[ADVICE] vomiting bile - any remedies?

Yup, that pretty much sums it up.

I keep vomiting bile. Charming, I know.

    Anyone have any remedies?

NB: stock standard remedies like crackers, ginger, and "eat a little often" type stalwarts are not helping. and I can't take antiemetics because they send me straight to sleep, and I work full time...

    Thanks in advance

    Oh darling, you poor thing

Have you spoken to your care provider? I'm a bit concerned about dehydration - are you feeling ok, apart from nausea?? Bit of a silly question I think... sorry

Are you trying to keep your fluids up?

Hun I know work is important but perhaps a few days off, take some anti-nausea meds and just rest, rehydrate, get some food into you, sleep.

I don't want you ending up in hospital...!

    More of these

ETA - could you try sea bands? The acupressure wrist bands that you can get from chemist? Helped me a little...

ETA more... what about acupuncture? I know a great lady who works a short tram ride from the CBD, she would be able to help I bet. PMing you details now.

Oh you poor thing! That sounds awful!

This is a long shot, but worked for DS recently when he had gastro...

Try having a tiny sip of flat cocacola every two minutes for 15 minutes. The cocacola has to be really flat, my GP's tip was to mix a teaspoon of sugar into it (it makes it sickly sweet) and that makes it flat right away. According to my GP it works wonders in terms of settling the stomach.

you poor poor thing My pregnancy entailed HG so I know the lovely fun of spewing bile! I know eating is far from your mind but if you can peel and grate a green apple and eat it, it can actually help. Its not so bad when it comes back up wither (like some other things). But if it does keep going and your hydration levels are too low you might need to look at some medication and a drip to get you back on track. Sorry you're sick hun, it really is awful

Not very nice, poor thing! There is a cap/powder called slippery elm. I'm pretty sure it is safe during pregnancy and will help settle your symptoms by being a calmative, nutrient and binder. Can get it from the health food shop/and chemist so check it out with them. Plus plenty of water. Feel betta soon.x

Acupuncture. Try and get in for an urgent appointment and book one for 48 hours later as well.

It was the only thing that stopped my constant vomiting.

Let us know how you go.

Ocean - thanks. I've emailed them to make enquiries ... haven't ever tried acupuncture before, but happy to give it a crack. At the moment, I also have an infection and recovering from conjunctivitis (never let it be said that DS is not a generous and sharing little munchkin man...) so am trying to keep fluids up, but may be a bit dehydrated over all... I took a day off the week before last, and worked from home one day last week, and will be in late tomorrow (my first hospital appointment ... freaking out a little, to be honest...) and then fly to Sydney on Thursday for a conference, so taking any more time off is really not possible ... but when away, I can sleep in (I'm staying in the hotel where the conference will be, so only have to be up at 8.30 for a quick bite and then conference starts at 9) and I can duck away during the dinner and go back to bed ... skipping dessert and the last 12 cases of wine is fine by me, at this stage! And I'm thinking of just taking a week off at the start of September if I'm not feeling better. I have a week where I only have one appointment, and I'm considering just booking it out. It will be just after I've announced too, so it doesn't matter then if people figure it out ... I don't know what you mean by sea bands. I'm guessing something to do with seasickness? I might have to scope out the chemists...

Thanks, Miss E - unfortunately, anything caffeinated is giving me rancid heartburn at the moment, so I don't think that will help ... kind of ironic, considering plenty of people use Pepsi as an antacid ... !

Lily Dust - ugh, commisserations ... it just sucks bum doesn't it ... green apple is a projectile weapon for me at the moment - spud guns ain't got squat on my trachia ... but thinking on it, last time watermelon seemed ok sometimes (and also wasn't too bad when it came back up...) so maybe I should get some. Thanks!

Crumpet - yes, yet it is. I've never tried powerade... might grab some red, and try that too. Can't hurt. And hey, it's red

Curlygirly - slipper elm, eh? Might have to add that to the shopping list. I've had a bit of a look online, and there seem to be lots of things saying it's fine while preggo, and some things saying not, or that it's not proven that it is ... I might ask at the pharmacy when I go. Thanks.

Tracy - I hope some of the ideas here help you!

Fiona - Thanks, hun. I've put in an email with some Qs to the place Ocean Princess has suggested. it will help!

    update:

    eep!

accupuncture - expensive! appointments between $70 and $90 a pop, and I'd probably need 2 per week.

zofran wafers - got some today, they're not helping ... does it take a while for them to start working? I've only had one so far, but the Dr said not to have more than 2 a day...?

sea bands - we might have a winner. despite being unattractive little mini tennis wrist bands with a plastic lump, they actually really helped ... nausea mostly went away, but heartburn came with avengance - and was mostly relieved by Zantac ... is a combination of seabands and zantac my way forwards? perhaps ...

slippery elm - forgot all about it ... if the seabands stop working (and the zofran doesn't start working!) I'm on it like a rash (subject to safety for ziggy of course...)

Yeah it is exxy! Have you got PHI hun - it's claimable under my cover, worth checking?

That's one of the reasons I stopped after I conceived DS... $$$

Yay for the seabands!!! Lucky it is winter and you can cover them up

Great that you have found something that's offering a modicum of relief...

Okay throwing and option out there... that might not be possible... You would have to check with your OB/pharmacy...
Could you try something like Nexium/antiacid (one that's suitable in pregnancy) to dull some of that bile from burning and this could help with the nausea and vomiting and might actually help you be able to eat something... Drinking a lot of water also dilutes the bile (acids)... or sucking on a cough lolly/antiacid...

(I'm so tired, so no idea if that actually makes sense, hope it does)

Are they 4 or 8mg?? I took 4mg ones and could take up to 4 a day. Had to take them religiously or the throwing up would start again . Zofran didnt stop it for me but it eased it a little until about 20 weeks thats when I first left the house again as I could throw up and be on my way, throw up again etc etc so I stopped taking them then. I think the earlier you start them the better the chance of them helping fight the vomitting. You poor poor thing, I get all teary thinking about how you must be feeling

I found drinking room temp (sometimes a bit flat) ginger ale helped alot. It was just an el-cheapo brand and it was on special once for 99c for 1.25ltrs. DP came home was 8 bottles!

That helped alot. I spent alot of time gagging over the toilet.

What ever you do, DON'T EAT MARSHMALLOWS!! I was addicted to the before I got pregnant with DD, and they burn so badly when they come back up.

Hope you feel better soon, xxxoxo

mumenurse - thanks for reminding me, I got something prescribed last time (Periot or something?) which made me make less acid bile, so there was less bile and acid to throw up ... will ask my Dr whether that would be an idea again ...

charlotte - the smell of ginger is pretty off for me at the moment, but I might try some grated in warm water ... it sometimes helps a little (smell notwithstanding...)

lily dust - they're 8mg, but the Dr said to break them in half, and stick to 2 pieces a day. I'll keep taking them if the bands stop working.

but yes, strange as it might sound, the sea bands still seem to be assisting ... might be the best $18 investment ever! They don't fix it completely, but taking zantac first thing and keeping the bands on is working so far today ... no idea how or why they would work, but frankly, I don't care ... I'm just glad that they seem to help

but I will have to wear a cardigan at work, so they can't be seen ... don't want anyone guessing early!

peanutter have you considered the blackmores morning sickness tablets? bvitamin and ginger... I took them with all my pregs (haven't needed them with this one just yet) and it was the only thing that helped. Had to take them every day of course but they also gave me a bit of energy from the b vitamins. They're vile to throw up but if you take them regularly enough they're great. Good luck! At least the seabands seem to be helping. I'll keep them in mind for if I need something this time round.
